We love taking inspiration from our favourite celebrities when it comes to fashion. Our Famous Style Icons series has looked at the styles worn by some of the biggest stars, including Michael B. Jordan and Tom Hardy, and today, we’re exploring the style of Canadian-American Hollywood star, Ryan Reynolds. While his career originally started out in the early 90s, his breakout role in sitcom Two Guys and a Girl between 1998 and 2001 is what lead him into the world of the big screen. He later went on to star in movies such as The Proposal, Waiting… and Blade: Trinity, although arguably, he’ll be best known for his role as wisecracking superhero Deadpool in the 2016 film and its sequel in 2018.
Off screen, Reynolds is certainly one of our favourite style icons, sporting a range of looks on the red carpet and beyond. Today, we’re taking a look at some of his best looks, as well as a few pieces you can wear to recreate them yourself.
The Classic Cardigan
One of Reynolds’ signature pieces is the cardigan, instantly proving that you can be warm and still look stylish. Often wearing them underneath suits, the simple cardigan gives the impression of a waistcoat while also providing additional warmth. Reynolds usually opts for a classic V-neck cut which helps prevent the overall look from being too chunky, and when it comes to colour choices, it’s usually a neutral colour palette of beige, navy and charcoal. However, if you want to add a pop of colour, a refreshing blue can be just the tonic – we love this Long Sleeve V-Neck Jumper by Polo Ralph Lauren.
When it comes to red carpet style, Reynolds is often spotted wearing a sharp, stylish three piece suit. Despite the fact he usually plays it safe, sticking with basic navy and black colourways, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t experiment either. Often, it’s all in the details, pairing three piece suits with paisley print accessories such as ties or pocket squares. While we may not necessarily have any black-tie occasions to dust off our suits for anytime soon, you can still take a leaf from the Green Lantern star’s book by opting for paisley print shirts ready for those smarter events (as soon as we’re allowed of course). When it comes to paisley prints, there’s only one brand that comes to mind – Pretty Green. We especially love this Marsham Print Corduroy Shirt which will bring a quirky and modern twist to any suit or will add a touch of fun to the classic “jeans and a smart shirt” look.
While we’re on the topic of vibrant, statement shirts, it appears that Ryan Reynolds is also a fan. There’s an unwritten rule in fashion that for men over 30, the jazzy shirt is a no-go, but Reynolds is full of proof that it can still be done, and more importantly, that it can be done well. The main rule to bear in mind? Keep everything else simple. Go for a well fitted pair of trousers in a neutral colour and if you’re going for outerwear too, again, think neutral colours and simplistic designs. If you want to give this trend a try yourself, a great segway is with the Fair-Isle Thunderbolt Shirt by Neil Barrett – the slim fit gives a sleek and sharp silhouette, while the thunderbolt print is out there enough to make you stand out, but understated enough if you’re new to the whole statement shirt thing. Alternatively, if you’re not quite brave enough to go for bold prints and patterns, opt for brighter colours compared to your usual white and black shirts to add more colour to your collection.
The Plain White Tee
When he’s not turning heads on the red carpet, Reynolds has also been shown to be a fan of the classic white tee. A wardrobe staple that every man should have, the white t-shirt remains a timeless piece that will see you all through the spring and summer. Take inspiration from the Deadpool star and pair with earthy toned chinos and white sneakers for a simple yet stylish look that you’ll want to wear all spring. If you don’t have this classic tee in your collection yet either, be sure to check out our offerings from your favourite brands to find your new go-to piece. Our top pick? This Classic Short Sleeve Design by Belstaff – simple and understated, we can’t ever see it going out of style.
The Leather Bomber Jacket
Finally, when it comes to outerwear, in addition to the double breasted blazers he often sports at red carpet events, Ryan Reynolds is also a fan of the leather bomber jacket. While he often seems to favour more neutral colour palettes, he’s also been known to sport sharp looking styles all in black, even more so when it comes to the leather bomber. A timeless edition to your outerwear collection, the leather bomber jacket is perfectly paired with numerous different combinations. However, if you want to channel the man himself, pair a black leather bomber with slim fitted jeans, such as the HUGO 708 Jean and a simple black polo. You can’t go wrong with this Twin Tipped Polo by Fred Perry either. Throw it all together and you’ve got yourself a look that’s casual-luxe.
What we love the most about Ryan Reynolds’ style is that it’s incredibly easy to replicate – by opting for neutral colour palettes, classic wardrobe staples and adding detail through your accessories, you can easily draw inspiration and add plenty of A-list style into your wardrobe.
