Wallowing in the disappointment of England coming so close to a first World Cup final for 52 years? Here’s what to do now that it’s not coming home…

Watch Wimbledon

Unless you're a hardcore tennis fan, you can be forgiven for missing the majority of this year’s Wimbledon tournament. If you can’t bring yourself to watch the World Cup final this Sunday, thankfully the men’s final will be taking place around the same time. It's guaranteed to feature either Novak Djokovic or Raphael Nadal, so it promises to be a good one. Plus, it’ll be nice to watch a bit of sport without having to worry if you’re going to make it into work the next day. Remember what that was like?

Soak up the sun (while you can)

We’ve been spoilt so far this summer with glorious weather throughout the country. It just so happens that we've also all had a legitimate reason to be inside a few nights a week, with football occupying our screens for the last month. Like England in a major tournament, there's no guaranteeing how long it might stick around for. Although when it comes to summer, we'd gladly take extra time.

Sign the petition for Gareth Southgate to get a knighthood

Comforting opposition players after they’ve lost on penalties, making the waistcoat fashionable again, dad dancing to the England fans. Oh, and masterminding England’s semi-final run. No wonder there's already a petition to have him knighted. Sir Gareth has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it? At the very least, he should get the ‘nicest bloke of the year’ award.

Change the record

You know what was great during England’s World Cup run? Three Lions was played so much that it re-entered and nearly topped the official music charts. You literally couldn’t get away from it. You know what’s rubbish now that England aren’t in the World Cup anymore? You get the point. Time to put the legendary football anthem back on the shelf for another four years and put the charts back to normal. Thank god for George Ezra.

Hit the festival circuit

Thankfully summer doesn’t end when the World Cup does, and if this weather continues we’ll be in for a glorious one. The major festivals kick off in July, and carry on through to September, with Glastonbury, Bestival, Parklife and Reading & Leeds, to name but a few. If you can't make it to one of the big ones, there are hundreds of small and medium sized festivals dotted around the country. If being caked in mud in a field for three days doesn't take your mind off the World Cup...

Being so close to a World Cup final is agonising. But the fact that we were within touching distance says a lot about how far Gareth Southgate and his players have come.
