Stone Island: Projects, Processes and Archives

Micro Twill Down Parka

Stone Island: Innovation, Obsession, Outerwear

Stone Island has been rewriting the rules since 1982. Built on military-inspired silhouettes, experimental fabrics, and the now iconic compass badge. Stone Island wasn’t born from chasing trends, but from Massimo Osti taking an old truck tarpaulin fabric called Tela Stella, realising it could be something more, and turning it into jackets the world had never seen before.

At EQVVS, we’re equipped. We've stocked the shelves and loaded the site with the latest releases from the real pioneers of technical outerwear, and we’ve hand-picked a refined edit of standout pieces. And we've secured a metaphorical pamphlet worth of knowledge on what it all means. Whether you’re a long-time aficionado or wearing the badge for the first time, this is your chance to secure the season’s defining pieces.

The Stone Island Architecture

Created in Ravarino, Italy back in the early 80's, Stone Island started conducting fabric research and garment exploration and experimentation, and found ways that fabrics can be manipulated and transformed in ways that, until then, had never been done before.

The components that make up Stone Island's collection are nothing short of technical mastery; borderline scientific if you will. The real makings of some of these key features? The real process that gives Stone Island it's edge, and the signifiers for how the garments have been made? Here's a breakdown of what it all means and how it works.

Garment Dyeing:

In short, garment dyeing is the process of dyeing the garment at the end of it's construction. The pieces are crafted entirely from raw, uncoloured fabrics, and are then dyed as the last step of the process. The result? An entirely unique piece every time, it's completely adaptive and the dyes are specifically selected to account for the unique makeup of each garment. It yields pieces that have a worn in feel, creates subtle and natural fading and colour variation around the seams and edges, and different fabric makeups.

TC - Tinto Capo, translated from Italian means 'Garment Dyed'.

Anti-Drop:

A durable water repellent (DWR) that's applied during the garment dyeing process. Anti-drop is a special resin that forces water, light rain and everyday dirt to bead up and roll off the surface instead of soaking in. By integrating the anti-drop agent with the high temperature garment dyeing vats, it ensures a protective finish binds with the rich, complex colours and texture of the garment, without compromising on durability and breathability.

ECONYL® Nylon Metal:

One of Stone Island's most popular fabrics, and so it should be. Nylon Metal epitomizes the brands approach to fabric experimentation, both in its architecture and also how it looks. The fabric is built from a nylon yarn, with three parts (trilobate) with a grey weft and white warp colours.

With this as its base, the fabric undergoes a double-dyeing, high temperature process. All of this gives the Nylon Metal its uniquely interesting visual. It's iridescent and different tones intensify and change under different light conditions. The Nylon Metal was debuted in 2005, but it's foundations were established back in the 1990's in the Formula Steel, that was made using a nylon shell, bonded to polyurethane film, giving it a metal-like effect.

Micro Reps:

Crafted to a military spec, Stone Island's Micro Reps fabrication uses weft yarns that are thinner in diameter to the warp. (The warp runs vertically, weft runs horizontally, under and over the warp). The result of this fabric, means it's tightly woven, compact and wind resistant.

Raso Gommato:

A truly integral part of Stone Island's design since its 1983 debut. The approach to the Raso Gommato collection was retaining the pieces waterproof functionality, but making it less rigid. Osti used long-fibre Egyptian cotton, coated with polyurethane, then it would be garment dyed to add depth of colour and relax the fibres further.

Tela Stella:

Tela Stella set the tone for Stone Island's design approach. With utility serving as inspiration for the label, Osti spent a considerable amount of time working this material. It was a tarpaulin, inspired by those used on military trucks, and was made using a cotton canvas material. The fabric is then softened by coating it with a resin, dyeing on either side, and then washed using a pumice stone. The result? A windproof garment reminiscent of the old oilskins, weathered and corroded by the sea.

This Season's Collection

Stone Island’s latest drop is a masterclass in design discipline, and at its core is the hallmark garment-dyeing process, a technique perfected over decades, dropping colourways that feel like they’ve been dug up from a forgotten coastal bunker, think muted greens, deep blues, and weathered greys.

Stone Island Warp Rib Nylon-TC Jacket

You can’t control the forecast, but you can control how you face it. That’s where Stone Island steps in. Osti’s mastery of technical outerwear meets everyday wearability in this Warp Rib Nylon-TC Jacket, built to perform as well as it looks.

Treated with an anti-drop agent, it shrugs off light rain so you’re ready for whatever the skies throw at you. It’s your go-to for a crisp spring commute, layering over a hoodie on a weekend city stroll, or keeping you covered on those unpredictable in-between-season evenings.

More than just outerwear, it’s a statement of intent. Technical. Timeless. Ready when you are.

Stone Island Chenille Degradé Print Jumper

Smart enough for the office, relaxed enough for the weekend, this is knitwear that does it all. The Stone Island Chenille Degradé Print Jumper takes on a timeless silhouette and gives it the brand’s unmistakable technical edge.

Cut to a relaxed fit with a naturally dropped shoulder line, it’s crafted from soft cotton chenille and constructed from individually knitted panels that are over-printed with white pigment, creating a distinctive gradient effect. The rolled-edge ribbed neckline adds a bit of texture, while the ribbed cuffs and hem keep the silhouette structured. Finished with the iconic Stone Island compass badge on the left sleeve for an unmistakable finishing touch.

Signed off with the compass badge on the sleeve, it’s the perfect bridge between smart and casual. Throw it over a shirt for a sharp dinner look, or pair it with jeans for a laid-back Sunday.

Proven once again: when Stone Island does knitwear, it’s never just knitwear.

Stone Island Membrana 3L TC Jacket

Pushing the boundaries of garment engineering again, Stone Island release the Membrana 3L TC Jacket in sage. Crafted from a three-layer lightweight performance fabric, made from an opaque nylon outer face, laminated to a breathable, water-resistant membrane, protected by an imperceptible polyester base.

The Membrana is then put through Stone Island's industry leading garment dyeing process that gives it a proper good, no-two-are-the-same colour to the outer face, all the while preserving the performance features of the inner membrane. The addition of a special agent to the dye formula makes the piece anti-drop, which means you can shrug off a bit of rain and dirt with ease.

Designed with a large hood fitted with a nylon tape drawcord and a snap button for securing, it's pretty good for keeping out the elements when the weather suddenly turns.

Fitted with two-way front zip closure, elasticated drawcord with stoppers at the hem and adjustable cuffs with nylon tape tab and snap button. Keep your essentials safe with bellows hand pockets that have a flap closure with a concealed snap button on nylon tape tabs and an overlapping second vertical pocket.
